Before She Arrives

Five looks. A grey seamless backdrop, a coral pink flowing dress, a pale pink eyelet, a dusty rose eyelet, and at the end of the session when the studio had found its rhythm — a dark neon sequence that the day had been building toward without anyone quite realising it.

The maternity session is a specific photographic genre with specific demands: document the physical reality of the pregnancy, produce images that the parents will want to look at in thirty years, and do both without reducing the subject to a single gesture. This session did all three.

THE FLOWING CORAL PINK DRESS

The opening look: the long flowing coral pink maternity dress against the grey seamless. The stuffed bunnies appeared mid-sequence. Two small soft toys, held against the bump. The image of Jess holding the bunnies while smiling at the camera is the session’s most immediately family-register image and its most popular with clients who see it.

THE EYELET DRESSES

The pale pink eyelet dress with its ruffled straps introduced the session’s most intimate register. On the white-covered surface, the dress pooled around her, the bump prominent, the expression completely relaxed — this is the image that requires the most trust between subject and photographer and rewards it in kind.
